Hyperbaric New

The question I get asked most often before a first session isn’t about the science. It’s some version of: ‘What actually happens?’

People want to know what the chamber looks like. Whether they’ll feel claustrophobic. What the pressure feels like. Whether they have to do anything, or just sit there. Whether it’s weird. Whether they’ll feel different walking out than they did walking in.

These are completely reasonable questions, and I’ve noticed that most clinics don’t answer them honestly – or at all. There’s a lot of vague reassurance (‘it’s very comfortable’, ‘completely relaxing’) and not much specific detail. That gap creates unnecessary anxiety before people even arrive.

So here is the honest, specific account of what a first Hydroxy Hyperbaric session at our Bowen Hills studio actually involves. No reassuring marketing language. Just what it’s like.

Before you arrive

There’s no complex preparation required. A few practical things worth knowing:

  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing. You’ll be in the chamber for 60 minutes, so anything you’d wear for a relaxed evening at home is ideal. No synthetic fabrics if you can avoid them.
  • Eat something beforehand – a light meal two to three hours before is ideal. An empty stomach isn’t a problem, but a very full one can make you uncomfortable in a pressurised environment.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 12 hours before your session. The chamber is working with your physiology – you want it in reasonable shape.
  • Skip the perfume or strong scents if you remember. It’s an enclosed space.
  • Bring headphones if you have them, or we’ll provide some. You can listen to whatever you want during the session.

That’s it. No GP referral. No special bloodwork. No particular lead time. You book, you come in.

Arriving at the studio

We’re at 273 Abbotsford Rd in Bowen Hills – a short drive from Fortitude Valley, New Farm, Spring Hill, and the Brisbane CBD. There’s parking on site.

When you arrive, you’ll meet a qualified HBOT technician. Not just a receptionist, not just a person who shows you where to sit. Someone who understands the protocol and can answer any questions you have before you step in. That’s a deliberate choice on our part. The chamber is a clinical tool. The person overseeing your session should know how to use it.

We’ll go through a brief intake – your current health picture, what you’re hoping to address, any contraindications to check for. This takes ten to fifteen minutes for a first visit and covers the basics to make sure the session is appropriate and safe for you. If there’s anything unusual in your health history, we’ll discuss it properly before proceeding.

Getting into the chamber

Our chambers are brand new, spacious, and lit well. The first thing most people say when they see one is: ‘Oh – it’s bigger than I expected.’ That matters. Claustrophobia is a real concern for many people who haven’t done this before, and we take it seriously. The design of the chamber is part of the clinical consideration, not an afterthought.

You enter fully clothed. You settle into the seat – it’s comfortable, with proper back support. If you want to bring a Kindle or a book, go ahead. You can listen to music, a podcast, an audiobook. Some clients use the time to meditate or just rest. There’s no right way to use the hour.

The door closes. It latches securely.

What the pressurisation feels like

This is the part people most often want to know about and get the least specific information on.

As the chamber comes up to pressure, you’ll notice a change in your ears. It’s the same sensation as descending in a plane – that mild fullness or pressure that you equalise by swallowing or yawning. We’ll show you the technique before your first session. It takes about 30 seconds to learn and works reliably. If it’s uncomfortable, you let us know and we slow the pressurisation.

Once the chamber is at full pressure, the ear sensation resolves. You’ll feel a slight warmth during pressurisation – normal – and then the chamber settles at a comfortable, steady pressure. That’s where it stays for the bulk of your session.

There’s a gentle hum. That’s the system maintaining pressure. Most people stop noticing it within a few minutes.

The 60 minutes inside

This is your time. Fully and entirely.

You don’t have to do anything. The therapy is passive – the pressure and the gas blend do the work. Your body is absorbing oxygen and molecular hydrogen into plasma and tissue throughout the session. You can feel this happening as a gradual physical relaxation. Some clients describe a warmth or tingling in the extremities early in the session, as circulation responds to the changed pressure environment. Most describe a settling – a quieting of the physical noise that accumulates through a normal day.

Many clients drift off to sleep. I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and I find it completely unremarkable when that happens. It’s not a problem. It’s probably the most useful thing your body can do with an hour of uninterrupted oxygenation.

The occasional first-timer feels slightly alert or ‘activated’ in the early sessions – a bit like the physiological clarity after cold water exposure. That settles into relaxation as your body adjusts to the protocol across sessions two and three.

Depressurisation and coming out

Coming out is gentler than going in. The chamber depressurises gradually – again, you’ll feel your ears adjust, but less dramatically than at the start. It takes three to five minutes.

The door opens. You stand up.

Most clients report feeling one of two things: either noticeably relaxed, sometimes sleepy, in a way that makes sense for what just happened. Or – more often after the second and third sessions – alert, clear-headed, and a bit lighter than when they went in. The cognitive clarity that clients with chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia report is often the first thing that shifts, before the pain picture changes.

There’s no required rest period. No restrictions on what you do next. You can drive. You can work. You can train. The session is complete the moment you step out.

What you might notice in the 24–48 hours after

First sessions can occasionally produce mild fatigue – not exhaustion, but the kind of tiredness that comes from the body processing something significant. Some clients report this as a ‘detox feeling’ in the first 24 hours. It passes quickly and is a normal response to the initial oxygenation and the mobilisation of cellular debris. Drink water. Sleep well. That’s the management plan.

Others feel nothing unusual and simply sleep well. Some feel notably better.

What changes most reliably across a course of sessions – typically from session three or four onward – is sleep quality. It’s almost universal. Clients who hadn’t slept properly in months suddenly sleeping through the night. We hear this so often that it’s become something we routinely prepare people for as an early positive signal.

A note on the team

I want to be direct about something that I think distinguishes our studio from most: every session is overseen by a qualified HBOT technician. On the team is a qualified remedial therapist and body psychotherapist. We are not a pod rental business with a booking app. We’re a clinical wellness environment where someone with actual qualifications is watching, available to talk, and capable of adjusting the approach if anything warrants it.

That matters if you’re coming with a complex health picture. It matters if you’re nervous. And honestly, it matters even if everything goes perfectly smoothly – which it almost always does.

Frequently asked questions about a first session

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes – for moral support, as a carer, or simply because you want company in the waiting area. The chamber fits one person per session, but there’s no restriction on who’s with you before and after.

What if I genuinely can’t handle the ear pressure?

In 20-plus years of practice, I’ve encountered very few people who genuinely couldn’t equalise. The technique is simple and we take as much time as you need. If there’s a genuine anatomical reason for difficulty (recent ear surgery, active ear infection, significant sinus congestion), we’ll discuss that in the intake and may recommend waiting until it resolves.

How soon will I notice a difference?

Some people notice something after the first session. Most notice something clear by session three or four. For chronic conditions, meaningful change typically emerges across a course of 10–15 sessions. We’d rather be honest about timelines than create expectations that set you up for disappointment.

What should I do right after my session?

Whatever you like. There are no restrictions. Drinking water is a good idea. If you feel sleepy, rest. If you feel energised, enjoy it. The body continues processing the session for 24–48 hours, so whatever you notice in that window is relevant information.

Do I need a referral?

No. Our Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy is a wellness service, not a medically prescribed treatment. You book directly, we do the intake together, and we proceed if the session is appropriate for you. If anything in your health history suggests we should communicate with your GP or specialist, we’ll raise that – but the referral isn’t a prerequisite.

One more thing

If you’ve been researching this for a while and still feeling uncertain – that’s completely normal. It’s a new experience, it involves pressure and an enclosed space, and the category is full of marketing language that doesn’t help you understand what you’re actually getting into.

The best version of ‘next step’ isn’t necessarily booking straight away. It might be calling and asking one question you haven’t been able to answer from reading. We’d rather you arrive informed and comfortable than arrive hesitant and leave with a list of things you wished you’d asked.
