Hyperbaric New

Most oxygen chambers do one thing. Ours does two.

That single distinction is worth understanding – not because I want to convince you to book a session before you’re ready, but because if you’ve been researching hyperbaric therapy in Brisbane and feeling like everything sounds the same, there’s a reason for that. Most of it is the same. A pressurised chamber, pure oxygen, 60 minutes. Standard HBOT, replicated across dozens of wellness studios now.

What we offer at Hyperbaric O2 Health in Bowen Hills is different enough that it has a different name: Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy. The distinction isn’t branding. It’s biochemistry.

And in March 2026, Southern Cross University launched an Australian-first clinical trial investigating mild hyperbaric therapy combined with molecular hydrogen – exactly what we’ve been doing here. That research didn’t create the protocol. It validated it.

So what actually is Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy?

The ‘hydroxy’ in the name refers to the combination of two gases: oxygen (O2) and molecular hydrogen (H2). Standard hyperbaric therapy works by pressurising pure oxygen so it dissolves into your blood plasma – going places normal red-blood-cell-bound oxygen can’t reach. That mechanism is real, well-documented, and clinically useful.

Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy keeps that core mechanism and adds something standard HBOT doesn’t have: molecular hydrogen.

Hydrogen is the smallest molecule in existence. It passes through cell membranes, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and reaches mitochondria directly. What it does once it gets there is where it gets interesting. Molecular hydrogen is a selective antioxidant – it neutralises the most damaging free radicals (specifically hydroxyl radicals, the ones that cause oxidative stress at the cellular level) while leaving beneficial reactive oxygen species intact.

In plain terms: oxygen drives healing. Hydrogen protects the cell environment in which that healing happens.

Combined under gentle pressure, the two work together in a way neither does alone.

One hour of Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy delivers the equivalent hydrogen benefit of consuming approximately 60 litres of hydrogen-infused water – without having to drink anything.

How the chamber itself is different

Here’s what I find most clinics don’t talk about clearly: chamber quality varies enormously, and it matters.

Our chambers at Hyperbaric O2 Health are brand new and engineered to hold steady, gentle pressure from the moment you step in to the moment you leave. No drop-off. No fluctuation. One calm, controlled hour. That consistency isn’t just more comfortable – it means the therapeutic dose is consistent throughout the session, which is what you actually need for the protocol to work.

You settle in fully clothed. Press play on whatever you want to listen to – playlist, podcast, audiobook. The door closes. The chamber pressurises gently (you’ll feel a mild change in your ears, exactly like descending in a plane). And then you’re there, in a quiet pressurised environment, with nothing to do except let your body absorb what it’s being given.

Sixty minutes, and then you’re out. Back to your day. No recovery time. No restrictions.

What you won’t find here is a pod and a button with an operator who hasn’t touched a textbook since their induction. Every session at our Bowen Hills studio is overseen by a fully qualified HBOT technician, with a qualified remedial therapist and body psychotherapist on the team. That level of clinical oversight is rare in a wellness setting. We’ve built a properly run studio around actually looking after people.

What Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy supports

I want to be precise here, because this is an area where wellness marketing can get loose and irresponsible. What Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy does is support the body’s own physiological processes – it doesn’t replace them, and it doesn’t cure anything. What clinical evidence and two decades of direct practice suggest it supports:

  • Tissue oxygenation in areas where circulation is compromised – including ligaments, tendons, and post-surgical tissue that has poor blood supply
  • Reduction of systemic and localised inflammation through mechanisms at the cellular level
  • Mitochondrial function and cellular energy production – which is why clients consistently report improved energy and reduced fatigue across a course of sessions
  • Neurological function – cognitive clarity, improved sleep architecture, and nervous system regulation
  • Immune response – oxygen-rich environments are inhospitable to anaerobic bacteria
  • Wound healing and post-surgical recovery, including the acceleration of angiogenesis (new blood vessel growth)
  • Skin health – the eczema testimonials we receive are some of the most gratifying

The breadth of that list reflects the fact that oxygen is foundational to virtually every biological process in the body. Optimise oxygen delivery at the cellular level, and the downstream effects are broad.

How this compares to what other Brisbane clinics offer

Brisbane’s hyperbaric wellness market has grown rapidly. TH7, Think2BeHealthy, Scalar Lounge, Wesley Hyperbaric – there are real options now, and most offer quality services.

The differences worth understanding:

  • Standard HBOT clinics (including some excellent ones in Brisbane) use pure oxygen or ambient air under pressure. No molecular hydrogen. The core oxygenation mechanism is similar; the antioxidant and cellular-protection dimension of hydrogen is absent.
  • Wesley Hyperbaric is a licensed day hospital – excellent for medically indicated conditions, but requires a GP referral and operates at significantly higher pressure for specific clinical presentations. It’s a different model serving a different need.
  • Most wellness HBOT studios are single-modality: you come in, you’re in the chamber, you leave. There’s no capacity to combine with musculoskeletal therapy or body psychotherapy.

That last point matters more than it might seem. For clients dealing with chronic pain, post-surgical recovery, or conditions with both a physical and psychological dimension – treating only one layer rarely resolves the whole picture. Our clinic is the only place in Brisbane where you can access Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy, musculoskeletal therapy, and body psychotherapy under one roof, with one practitioner holding all three disciplines.

A word on the Australian research landscape

The SCU/Southern Cross University clinical trial launched in March 2026 is worth mentioning because it speaks directly to what we do. The study – an Australian first – investigates mild hyperbaric therapy combined with molecular hydrogen in an oncology support context. The researchers specifically noted that mild HBOT has shown beneficial outcomes in non-oncology settings including ‘poor circulation, sports tissue injuries, post-concussion syndromes and Parkinson’s disease.’

That research didn’t surprise me. It confirmed what I’ve observed in clinical practice for years. The combination of oxygen and hydrogen under mild pressure does things that either gas alone doesn’t replicate. The science is catching up to the practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy the same as regular HBOT?

No. Standard HBOT uses pressurised pure oxygen. Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy combines oxygen and molecular hydrogen under mild pressure. The hydrogen component adds a selective antioxidant effect that standard HBOT doesn’t provide. The two protocols share the oxygenation mechanism but differ significantly in their cellular impact.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what you’re addressing. For general wellness and recovery, three to five sessions often produce noticeable effects – improved sleep, reduced inflammation, clearer cognition. For chronic conditions, post-surgical recovery, or complex presentations, a protocol of 10–20 sessions over several weeks is more appropriate. We assess your individual response rather than prescribing a fixed number upfront.

Is it safe? Will I feel claustrophobic?

Mild Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy is considered very safe. The chambers we use are spacious, well-lit, and comfortable. The vast majority of clients who were initially concerned about claustrophobia report no difficulty once they’re actually inside. The pressure change is gentle – most people compare it to the ear sensation of descending in a plane. You can stop the session at any point, though in practice almost nobody does.

Can I combine it with musculoskeletal therapy?

Yes – and at this clinic, that combination is one of our strongest treatment approaches. Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy enhances cellular healing; musculoskeletal therapy addresses structural dysfunction and tissue tension. Together, they consistently produce better outcomes than either modality alone. We’ll discuss what combination protocol makes sense for your specific situation.

Is Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy covered by private health insurance?

Wellness-focused Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy is not currently covered under standard Medicare. Some private health extras policies are beginning to cover complementary therapies – we encourage you to check with your fund directly. We can provide appropriate documentation to support any claim you may wish to lodge.

Ready to step in?

Brisbane has no shortage of chambers now. What it has a shortage of is properly qualified, integrated clinical environments that treat you as a whole person rather than a session on a booking app.

If you’re ready to understand whether Hydroxy Hyperbaric Therapy makes sense for your specific health goals – the conversation starts with a call or a booking. No commitment required.
